Men's Swimwear: What to Wear When the Context Leaves Nowhere to Hide

Swimwear is the piece where almost everything is on display and the margin for error is smaller than in any other category. The wrong fit, the wrong length, the wrong fabric — all of it more visible than in any other garment. The good news is that getting it right is not complicated: a few clear choices around length, fabric, and proportion produce results that look considered and work in and out of the water.

Swim Shorts and Board Shorts

Swim shorts — mid-thigh to just above the knee, with a drawstring waist and typically a mesh liner — are the practical standard for most men. The length question matters here just as it does in regular shorts: mid-thigh is the most flattering for most body shapes, keeps the silhouette looking contemporary, and avoids the dated quality of very long board shorts that reach toward the knee. Quick-dry nylon or polyester in a 4-way stretch handles both the swimming and the walking about afterwards without the damp-for-two-hours quality of non-technical fabrics.

Board shorts are the longer, surf-associated alternative — typically reaching mid-thigh to just above the knee, with a looser fit and sometimes a velcro waistband closure. The aesthetic is casual and beach-focused; the same shorts that look right at a surf beach can look somewhat oversized in an urban pool setting. The hybrid swim-short category — quick-dry fabric, neutral colourway, 5–7 inch inseam, no obvious surf branding — bridges both contexts convincingly.

Swim Briefs and Trunks

Brief-style swimwear — the classic European swim brief — is the choice for performance swimming and for contexts where minimising drag matters more than beach-casual aesthetics. Correctly worn by someone comfortable with them, they look entirely appropriate; the context and confidence with which they are worn determines how they read more than the garment itself. Swim trunks — a shorter, tighter cut than board shorts but covering more than briefs — sit in the middle ground and work for both recreational swimming and lounging.

Fabric and Performance

Chlorine-resistant fabrics matter if you swim in pools regularly — standard polyester degrades noticeably faster in chlorinated water than chlorine-resistant alternatives. Look for fabrics specified as chlorine-resistant for pool use; standard swim shorts are fine for occasional pool swimming and genuinely good for sea and open-water use. UV protection (UPF rating) is worth considering for pieces worn extensively in strong sun.

Styling Around Swimwear

The pieces worn over swimwear — the T-shirt pulled on for lunch, the shorts worn from beach to bar — determine how the overall look reads in practice. A clean, plain T-shirt from the T-shirts section and a pair of casual linen or chino shorts work as a beach-to-lunch outfit that requires no thought and looks entirely appropriate. Linen shirts unbuttoned over swimwear are a similar easy option that requires slightly more coordination but looks more considered.

Travel and Packing

Swimwear is one of the more travel-friendly garments — quick-dry fabrics pack small, weigh little, and are ready to wear again within an hour of washing. Packing two pairs for a beach holiday eliminates the need to wear damp shorts — one dries while the other is being worn. For travel involving both beach and more dressed-up occasions, the hybrid swim-short style that works equally well as a casual short means one garment covers both contexts without needing to pack a separate casual short and a swim short.

UV-protective rash guards are worth considering for extended time in strong sun, particularly for children and fair-skinned individuals. They cover the torso without restricting movement, provide UPF 50+ protection, and are increasingly mainstream in beach contexts where sun protection is taken seriously. Caring for Swimwear

Swimwear lasts considerably longer with minimal care. Rinse in cold fresh water after every swim — in the sea to remove salt and sand, in a pool to remove chlorine residue. Machine washing on a gentle cycle at 30°C is fine for most swimwear, but the tumble dryer degrades elastic fibres rapidly; always air dry flat or over a rail rather than in a machine. Avoid wringing out swim shorts, which stresses the fabric and waistband elastic. Sitting on rough surfaces in swimwear (abrasive pool edges, pebbly beaches) causes visible pilling and wear on the fabric surface that smooth flat surfaces do not — worth being aware of if longevity matters.
