Patio and Decking: The Foundation Everything Else in Your Garden Stands On

Before you buy the furniture, before you plan the planting, before you think about lighting or heating or any of the things that make a garden feel finished — you need to sort the ground you're standing on. A good patio or deck does something fundamental: it turns the garden from a space you walk through into a space you actually inhabit. It creates a defined outdoor room, a level surface where you can put things and people without worrying about uneven grass or mud, and a visual anchor that the rest of the garden organises itself around.

The difference between a garden with well-laid hard landscaping and one without is significant. You feel it every time you step outside.

Patio Options: Natural Stone, Porcelain, and Concrete

Natural stone — sandstone, limestone, slate, granite — is the premium choice, and for good reason. It ages beautifully, every slab is slightly different, and quality natural stone has a warmth and character that manufactured alternatives struggle to replicate. Indian sandstone is the most popular in UK gardens: available in a wide range of tones from buff to grey-brown, relatively affordable compared to other natural stones, and durable enough to last decades with reasonable maintenance. Seal it annually and keep it clean and it'll look good for as long as the house does.

Porcelain paving has taken a significant share of the market in recent years and it's not hard to see why — it's extremely hard-wearing, frost-resistant, non-porous (so virtually stain-proof), and comes in formats that convincingly mimic natural stone, concrete, and wood. It's also comparatively low maintenance. The downside is that it can feel cold and slightly clinical if not chosen carefully; warmer tones and textured finishes help considerably. Large-format slabs (600×900mm and up) look particularly good on bigger patios.

Concrete paving sits at the accessible end — less expensive than natural stone or quality porcelain, widely available, and perfectly functional. It's not as visually interesting as either alternative, but for utility areas and less prominent parts of the garden, it does the job.

Decking

Decking suits some gardens and aesthetics more naturally than hard paving — particularly where there's a level change to negotiate, where a more contemporary look is wanted, or where an existing garden tree needs to be incorporated into the surface. A deck that wraps around the base of a large tree, or that creates a raised platform overlooking the garden, does things paving simply can't.

Softwood decking (usually pine or spruce, pressure-treated) is the affordable standard. Properly treated and maintained — sealed annually, kept clean — it lasts well. Hardwood decking (ipe, balau, teak, Western red cedar) is substantially more expensive but far more durable, with a natural oil content that slows weathering significantly. Both need some attention; neither is truly zero-maintenance.

Composite decking is the modern low-maintenance alternative: a mix of timber fibre and plastic, available in a wide range of colours and grain effects, UV-stable, and requiring nothing more than an occasional wash. It doesn't develop splinters, doesn't need sealing, and maintains its appearance far better than softwood over time. The upfront cost is higher but the ten-year total cost of ownership often comes out lower once maintenance is factored in.

Laying and Preparation

The quality of the finished surface depends enormously on the preparation beneath it, which is where a lot of DIY projects fall down. Paving needs a properly compacted sub-base (at least 100mm of compacted hardcore for most residential situations), correctly mixed mortar bed, and precise jointing to prevent movement and weed ingress. Decking needs a properly levelled frame with adequate ventilation beneath the boards to prevent moisture buildup and rot.

For larger projects, professional installation is worth the additional cost — a poorly laid patio that's uneven, poorly jointed, or prone to pooling water is genuinely unpleasant to live with. For smaller areas or those with confidence and the right tools, DIY is achievable with proper preparation research.

Scale and Layout

Patios and decks are consistently undersized in garden designs, because people imagine a modest seating area rather than an actual outdoor room. A dining table, six chairs, and a parasol needs significantly more space than most first estimates allow. Measure your furniture with room to push chairs back, walk around the table, and leave a border to the lawn or beds. Then consider whether you want a single unified surface or separate zones — a dining area and a separate lounging corner can work better in a larger garden than one enormous expanse.

The surface you choose works together with everything placed on it — your outdoor furniture, outdoor lighting, and garden decorations all read differently against different materials. A warm sandstone patio softens contemporary metal furniture; a clean grey porcelain surface makes the same furniture look exactly right. It's worth deciding the aesthetic direction before committing to either.

Planning and Permissions

Most patio and decking projects fall within permitted development and don't require planning permission, but there are exceptions — if you're in a conservation area, if the decking would be raised more than 300mm above the existing ground level, or if it would be adjacent to a listed building.
