Beds: The Most Important Piece of Furniture You'll Ever Own

You spend a third of your life in bed. More time than you spend on any other piece of furniture, in any room, doing any activity. The bed you sleep on affects your sleep quality, your physical health (back pain, joint stiffness, posture), your mental health (sleep deprivation is linked to anxiety, depression, and cognitive decline), and how you feel every single morning when you wake up. If there's one piece of furniture worth investing in properly, it's this one. A good bed isn't a luxury; it's a health decision that pays dividends every night for the next ten to fifteen years.

The bed market covers bed frames, mattresses (often sold separately), divans, sofa beds, bunk beds, adjustable beds, and storage beds. The frame and the mattress work as a system — a great mattress on a poor frame won't perform to its potential, and a premium frame with a cheap mattress wastes the investment. Both components matter, and they need to be considered together.

Bed Frame Types

Platform beds have a flat, slatted or solid base that supports the mattress directly without a box spring. They're the modern standard — clean lines, lower profile, and compatible with any mattress type. Slatted bases allow airflow beneath the mattress, which prevents moisture buildup and extends mattress life. Solid bases are firmer and suit people who prefer a harder sleeping surface. Check slat spacing: gaps wider than 7cm can cause mattress sagging between slats over time.

Divan beds combine the frame and base into a single upholstered unit. They're the traditional British bed format — a fabric-covered base on castors, usually with built-in drawers for storage. Divans are practical (storage in a bedroom is always welcome), supportive (the solid or sprung base provides consistent mattress support), and easy to manoeuvre through narrow doorways because they split into two halves. They're less visually striking than a framed bed, but for bedrooms where storage and practicality outweigh aesthetics, they're hard to beat.

Storage beds — with hydraulic lift-up bases or pull-out drawers — are the space-saving solution for bedrooms that lack wardrobes or built-in storage. The area under a double bed is approximately 1.5 square metres of otherwise wasted space, and a storage bed turns it into a concealed cupboard. Ottoman bases (the hydraulic lift type) are the most popular — the entire mattress platform lifts on gas struts, revealing the full storage area beneath. They hold duvets, pillows, out-of-season clothing, and suitcases in a space that's completely hidden when the bed is made.

Sizing: Getting It Right

A single bed (90cm x 190cm) suits children and spare rooms. A double (135cm x 190cm) is the minimum for two adults but can feel cramped if either sleeper moves around — it's only 67.5cm each, narrower than a single. A king (150cm x 200cm) is the sweet spot for couples — enough space for each person to move without disturbing the other, and the extra 10cm in length accommodates taller sleepers. A super king (180cm x 200cm) is the luxury option that suits large bedrooms and anyone who values maximum sleeping space.

Measure your bedroom before choosing a size. A king bed in a small room leaves no space for bedside tables, walking around the bed, or opening wardrobe doors properly. Allow at least 60cm of clearance on each side of the bed for access, and ensure you can fully open drawers and doors without the bed blocking them. The bed should feel generous in the room, not cramped — sleeping in a room that feels overcrowded by the bed undermines the restful atmosphere you're trying to create.

Materials and Style

Wooden bed frames (oak, pine, walnut, beech) are the timeless choice — warm, durable, and available in every style from rustic farmhouse to sleek Scandinavian. Solid wood is the premium tier (it lasts decades and develops character over time). Engineered wood is the practical tier (cheaper, lighter, less likely to warp, though not as long-lasting or repairable). Metal frames (iron, steel, brass) suit industrial, vintage, and minimalist interiors. Upholstered frames (fabric or leather headboards, padded sides) add softness and luxury — a tall upholstered headboard transforms a bed into a statement piece and provides comfortable support for sitting up reading.

Headboards: The Finishing Touch

A headboard isn't structural — the bed works perfectly without one. But aesthetically and functionally, a headboard completes the bed. It gives you something to lean against comfortably when reading or watching TV in bed. It protects the wall from marks, oils, and scuffs where heads and pillows rest. And it's the visual anchor of the entire bedroom — a large upholstered headboard in a rich fabric makes a bed look like the centrepiece of the room rather than just something to sleep on. Headboards can be attached to the bed frame, wall-mounted independently (useful for divan beds), or freestanding behind the bed.
