Tables: The Surface Around Which Everything Else Revolves

Tables are the centre of domestic life. The dining table is where families gather, where meals become conversations, where homework gets done, where celebrations happen. The coffee table is where the living room's daily life plays out — remote controls, cups of tea, magazines, snacks, feet. The desk is where work happens. The bedside table is where the last and first moments of every day unfold. No other category of furniture appears in every room, serves every activity, and brings people together as consistently as tables do.

Each serves a specific purpose, but they all share the same fundamental requirement: the surface needs to be the right size, the right height, and the right material for its intended use. A beautiful dining table that's too small for your family is a frustrating daily compromise. A stunning coffee table at the wrong height for your sofa is uncomfortable to use. Getting the basics right matters more than the aesthetics.

Dining Tables: The Room's Social Centre

A dining table needs to seat your household comfortably for daily meals and accommodate guests when you entertain. Allow 60cm width per person as a minimum — a 150cm table seats six at a squeeze; a 180cm table seats six comfortably or eight at a push. Extendable tables are the practical solution for households that need everyday compactness but occasional capacity — a 150cm table that extends to 200cm handles both Tuesday's family dinner and Christmas with the in-laws.

Rectangular tables are the most space-efficient for fitted rooms — they sit against a wall or float in the centre and seat the most people per square metre. Round tables seat more people than equivalent rectangular tables because there are no corners wasting space, and they create a more social dynamic (everyone faces the centre and can see everyone else). Oval tables combine the social benefits of round with the space efficiency of rectangular. Square tables suit small households and compact dining areas — a 90cm square table is the perfect intimate setting for two or a workable surface for four.

Coffee Tables: The Living Room Workhorse

A coffee table sits at the centre of the seating arrangement and serves as the communal surface for everything the living room generates — drinks, books, remote controls, snacks, flowers, and the decorative objects that give the room character. Height should match or sit slightly below the seat height of your sofa (typically 40–45cm). Length should be approximately two-thirds the sofa's length for visual proportion. The table should be close enough to reach comfortably from the sofa without leaning forward excessively — 40–50cm between sofa and table is the comfortable sweet spot.

Storage coffee tables (with shelves, drawers, or lift-up tops) solve the clutter problem that every coffee table suffers from. A lower shelf holds magazines, books, and baskets for remotes and miscellaneous items. Drawers hide everything completely. Lift-top mechanisms raise the surface to laptop height, which makes working from the sofa ergonomically workable rather than hunched and uncomfortable.

Side Tables and Bedside Tables

Side tables — positioned beside sofas and armchairs — provide a surface for drinks, lamps, phones, and books within arm's reach. The surface should be approximately the same height as the sofa arm or slightly below. C-shaped (or cantilever) side tables slide under the sofa arm, positioning the surface directly over your lap — perfect for eating, laptoping, or drinking without a coffee table in the way.

Bedside tables (nightstands) hold the essentials of the last hour of your day and the first hour of tomorrow: a lamp, a phone, a book, a glass of water, a clock. A single drawer handles the smaller items (earplugs, lip balm, medication) that would otherwise clutter the surface. Bedside tables should be roughly the same height as the top of the mattress for comfortable reaching from a lying position — too high and you're reaching up blindly in the dark; too low and you're groping downward over the bed edge.

Materials and Durability

Solid wood tables are the durability standard — properly cared for, they last generations. Oak, walnut, ash, and beech are the common species, each with distinctive grain and colour. Wood tables develop character over time: patina, minor marks, and the gentle wear that tells the story of a table's life. Glass tables feel lighter and more contemporary, and they make small rooms feel more spacious because you can see through them. The trade-off: glass shows every fingerprint and requires frequent cleaning, and the constant fear of a heavy object shattering the surface is real (though tempered glass is significantly more resilient than standard).

Marble and stone tables are the premium statement — heavy, luxurious, and striking. They suit dining rooms and living rooms where the table is intended as a focal point. Metal-framed tables with wood, glass, or marble tops combine industrial structure with surface variety, and they suit modern and transitional interiors. Engineered wood and laminate tables are the budget option — they look good initially, but they can't be refinished when damaged the way solid wood can, which limits their long-term lifespan.

Protecting Your Table

Use coasters. Use placemats. Use tablecloths or runners when the table is in active use. Water rings, heat marks, and scratches on a dining table are preventable damage that accumulates from laziness rather than use. A solid wood table can be sanded and refinished if marks do develop; glass and stone can't. Felt pads on the bottom of everything that sits on the table (lamps, vases, decorative objects) prevent scratching that you won't notice happening until it's already there.
